IO AMO BERGAMO

Attorno a noi è tutto così surreale…

Telecamere, server, connessione. Verso acqua alle piante, povere loro.
Poi esco e torno subito a casa.

I giorni passano, lenti e tutti uguali.

  • Correzione colore
  • Applicazione di filtri cinema
  • Lensflare e bagliori in alcune scene
  • Nuvole volumetriche in alcune scene
  • Titolazioni

… e innumerevoli modifiche a seguire.

I was born and live in Bergamo.
I’m from Bergamo, I am part of it.
I speak Italian, English but I am immersed in the Bergamo dialect.
I live in the epicenter of the largest epidemic that Italy, Europe and perhaps the whole world have ever had to face since the time of the plague. And all this overwhelmed us in a few days.
The people next to me fall like flies one by one and the bells count those who can’t make it from morning to evening.

Our world has stopped. Everything around us is so surreal … Empty streets, shops turned off and schools closed for 4 weeks now. Shopping malls look like abandoned cathedrals in the desert.
The tragedy lives in hospitals. Doctors, nurses and helpers who don’t count private hours of sleep.
The silence on the street is broken only by the screem of the ambulances, sometimes by the helicopters that fly over us in the direction of the great Bergamo Hospital.

We don’t see the light at the bottom of the tunnel. The numbers are pitiless and speak clearly: until everything remains permanently stopped for at least 15-20 days, we will not get out of this nightmare.

The work is stopped for everybody. We will have nothing to support ourselves for who knows how many weeks, maybe months.
The studio where I work is closed and sometimes, if the laws passed day by day allow it, I take a visit for routine checks. Cameras, servers, connection. To water plants, poor them.
Then I go back home immediately. On the way I never meet anyone. A partner is waiting for me, a dog Jack Russell eager to run in the meadows and him, my little 2 year old boy. He who no longer leaves the house, has not gone to the nursery for a month and wonders what happened to his friends and the teacher ‘s cuddles.

The days go by, slow and all the same. I moved everything that was possible to move from the studio home, everything that allowed me to continue working and complete what I had in progress. Fortunately, the work did not stop completely and after setting up a small study in the only little room in the house that was still little used, I was able to continue pretending that nothing around us had changed.

Bergamo is empty. I would have liked to be able to film it, perhaps with a drone. Someone did it but disobeying current laws. So the ingenuity took the ball. Being a Google photographer, long ago Google gave me access to Google Earth Studio (I talked about it in this post) and this seemed to me a good opportunity to be able to test it and discover its potential.
The workflow, which overall involved the 1 week commitment, was divided into:

  • Selection of geographical and historical points of interest
  • Positioning of cameras, shots and highlights in Google Earth Studio
  • Keyframe animation
  • Web rendering
  • Import the rendered files into Final Cut Pro X timeline
  • Search and select the audio track
  • Editing sub to the audio track and the chosen text (an exquisite Bergamo’s dedication by Rudolf Von Klaus)
  • Color correction
  • Application of cinema filters
  • Lensflare and flashes in some scenes
  • Volumetric clouds in some scenes
  • Titles

… and countless changes to follow.

The result is a sincere dedication for my city which I hope you will appreciate.

Come on Bergamo, don’t give up.
